Jewellery Guide

Ess & Co jewellery is made to tolerate water and harsh conditions.

Always remember that jewellery should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off when dressing/ undressing.

Here is a list of materials used to make our jewellery.

Stainless steel:

Stainless Steel Jewellery is a steel alloy with a minimum of 10.5% chromium content and a maximum of 1.2% carbon by mass.

Stainless Steel has a naturally high resistance to tarnishing and rusting hence why we use this material in most of our products.

These products are water resistant, but as with any jewellery, it is best to avoid contact with chemicals to maintain their shine. Please note that the color tone of stainless steel products is slightly darker than that of sterling silver products. They also vary in tones from product to product. Some of our stainless steel jewellery contains an 18k PVD gold plating to enhance the colour and durability of the metal even more.

If you want to buy longer-lasting products, please choose stainless steel products.

Sterling silver:

Silver has a softer structure compared to many mines. Having a soft structure makes it difficult to process in various designs. In order to give silver a hardness that can be processed, it must be mixed with various metals such as copper.

925 Sterling Silver consists of 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper.

Silver is a precious and gentle material. Please take care of these products.

When you are not using silver products, we strongly recommend that you keep them in a closed box away from light.

When not in use, silver that is exposed to air, moisture and sunlight loses its originality over time.

Gold Plated Sterling Silver:

Much like with solid gold pieces, gold-plated jewellery can tarnish over time if not properly cared for. Tarnishing is a process in which the gold reacts to air and moisture, causing it to oxidise and appear darkened. You may find that pieces start to lose their shine and appear dull over time due to a buildup of dust and dirt, as well as the natural oils on our skin, perfumes and moisturisers reacting with the gold plating and causing them to tarnish.

If you’ve noticed your gold-plated jewellery has started to tarnish, don’t worry. With some TLC, your pieces can be restored and back glistening in no time. Remember to remove jewellery before  spraying perfumes and applying other chemicals. Make sure to dry jewellery thoroughly after exposure to water and moisture.

Cultured pearls:

Our pearl jewellery range from freshwater pearls to saltwater pearls as well as perfectly round forms or baroque forms.

Pearls by nature are precious and delicate gemstones, therefore, it is advised to take any pearl jewellery off when showering, swimming and applying harsh chemicals to keep them from becoming dull and the pearlescent lustre from wearing off.

Natural Gemstones & Cubic Zirconia:

At Ess & Co. we admire natural gemstones and Cubic Zirconia crystals as we envision to use them to add uniqueness to our jewellery.

CZ and most gemstones can be cleaned and cared for just like our tarnish free jewellery metals. They can withstand moderate to harsh conditions as well as water.  Most of our gemstones are polished and coated to resist high temperatures and physical damage. As they are natural, colours of gemstones are unique and vary from crystal to crystal.
